Love Wins: On the Bible and Marriage Equality

As a person of faith, it's been disheartening to see much (but not all) of the Christian community at the helm of leading the anti-marriage equality movement. It'll be interesting now to see how committed those opposing it will now adhere to the biblical concepts of submitting to the government.Romans 13:1-3 states, “Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves." God created government to establish order, punish evil, and promote justice (Genesis 9:6; 1 Corinthians 14:33; Romans 12:8). Even the Apostle Paul made this clear when writing that passage under the rule of Nero, one of the most evil rulers in the Roman empire.

Yet, we don't always have to obey the government. You shouldn't do things that you feel are wrong (Acts 5:27-29). As people say if you don't believe in same-sex marriage, then don't have one. But if one is to be strictly Biblical on all matters (and this isn't even Deutoronimical law, like banning shellfish), then respecting laws on same-sex marriage has to be a part of that package.Of course, people are complex and are walking contradictions. But just thinking that this point probably is going to remain fairly quiet within the church who was loudest against the legislation.
