Benny and the Jetlag

It’s easy to get lost in the mire of terrible news and conflict. I’m guilty of this often. But last night, I was reminded how special moments can still find their way into our lives if we let them.

While on a layover in Atlanta, an elderly pianist was playing songs in the middle of the food court. After a trailer for “Bohemian Rhapsody” came on, she switched things up and started playing “Don’t Stop Me Now” by queen. Soon, when nearby tables caught the melody, they began singing along.

She continued with “Benny and the Jets,” to which numerous stranded strangers joined in, carrying the tune loudly like a flash mob. When she finished, many of us gave her a standing ovation and people began hugging each other. She teared up and said it was the best night she ever had.

It’s amazing how the music of Freddy Mercury and Elton John can bring people together like that…it was probably the most rock n’ roll thing I’ve seen in a long time.
